Warm weather means sun in our faces, wind in our hair and prevention on our pets! That’s right, it’s the time of year we all wait for to spend time outside and enjoy nature with our pets. But that also means it’s the time of year that fleas and ticks are most active. Unfortunately, they want to hang out with your pet too. But don’t worry, we have you covered! We offer a wide variation of oral and topical flea and tick prevention for our furry friends.

Flea and tick control. It is such a wide range of preventatives from oral to topical, sprays, and collars. It can be overwhelming at times so we decided to give you a guide of the products we carry in the clinic. These are products that Dr. Alexander trusts and suggests for flea and tick control. If you are currently using another product, talk to Dr. Alexander if you are considering switching to one of these mentioned below or to discuss the current product you are using and its safety and effectiveness.

Dr. Alexander does not suggest the usage of flea and tick collars for proper prevention. A flea and tick control collar sits directly on the skin of your pet and works by using the friction against the skin directly to release a pesticide to kill fleas and ticks. They are not as effective as oral or topical prevention and can be dangerous for both the pet and their human caretaker.

Canines

Oral

Credelio is a chew the provides flea and tick protection for one month. This is for puppies 8 weeks of age and older from 6.1-25 pounds. Credelio treats the 4 most common types of ticks. Credelio is a great start for flea and tick protection for young dogs until they are old enough to switch to Bravecto.

Bravecto 1 Month is a new product we now offer at the clinic. It offers the same great protection that adult Bravecto does, just for puppies! This is a chew that lasts 1 month for flea and tick control. It can be given to puppies that are 8 weeks of age or older, and weighing 4.4 pounds or greater.

Bravecto  is a tasty chew that provides 12-week flea and tick protection.  It begins killing fleas within two hours after the flea has fed and controls 4 species of ticks within 12 hours of them feeding.  It can be used on dogs six months of age and older and weighing 4.4 pounds or greater.  Bravecto is recommended for any dog and is a great preventative to combine with Sentinel.  Bravecto is a prescription only drug, so it must be purchased at your vet. Bravecto is not recommended for dogs that have a history of seizure activity or tremors.

Topical

Vectra 3D is a topical prevention for fleas, ticks, mosquito, and biting flies.  Vectra 3D is recommended for dogs who frequent wooded areas or go to the lake as it not only kills fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and biting flies, but also repels them.  Vectra 3D is for dogs and puppies over the age of 7 weeks old, weighing at least 2.5 pounds and must be applied monthly.

Advantix is a topical tick, mosquito, and biting fly repellent that also kills adult fleas. Advantix can be used on dogs and puppies that are over 7 weeks in age, weighing 4 or more pounds and must be applied monthly.

**All topical product should be applied from tail to neck.  When applying a product be sure that the nose of the applicator is under the fur and against the skin.  Squeeze the applicator while dragging the tip from tail to neck until the tube is empty.

Felines

Feline Bravecto is a topical solution that targets fleas and ticks. It can be given to cats and kittens 6 months or older, 2.6 pounds or higher. One dose lasts for 12 weeks. Dr. Alexander suggests this for cats indoor and outdoor. Fox Hill Veterinary Clinic offers this product in single dosages.

Revolution controls heartworms, fleas, and intestinal parasites such as hookworm and roundworm.  It can be used on cats 8 weeks of age or older weighing at least 5.1 pounds but not over 15 pounds.  Revolution must be applied monthly.  Dr. Alexander recommends this product for cats who are allowed to go outside.  Fox Hill Veterinary Clinic sells this product in a 6 month box.

Feline Advantage kills the adult and larvae stages of the flea.  Advantage is meant for cats 8 weeks and older weighing 5 pounds or more.  It must be applied monthly and kills fleas within 12 hours of application.  Dr. Alexander suggests this product for cats who stay indoors.  Fox Hill Veterinary Clinic offers this product in a 4 month box.

**When applying a topical solution on a cat or kitten it should be applied, in entirety, high on the neck.  Be sure to place the applicator tip under the fur and on the skin, then empty the tube in the same spot.  Keeping the content high on the neck makes it difficult for the cat or kitten to lick it off.
